Microsoft Deployment v4 – Save Hours of Time Testing and Troubleshooting Lite-Touch Applications

As with BDD 2007 you have the ability to create a separate task sequence that allows you to test anything you want. The example that I will use is a huge time saver in troubleshooting applications during the Lite-Touch development.

Thanks to Ben Hunter who first documented this process for Bdd 2007 on his blog. The link to his this blog is http://blogs.technet.com/benhunter/archive/2007/05/14/update-how-to-manually-use-a-bdd-task-sequence-to-test-application-installation.aspx

For Microsoft Deployment v4 the process is pretty much the same with the exception that you must leave the task "Install Operating System" that is under the Install group. You would then disable this task as it is only necessary for the process to filter to what you are trying to test.

Here are the steps to create an application only testing task.

  1. Right Click on the Task Sequences in the right in the left hand pane and select New.
  2. Give the Task Sequence ID a meaningful name like APPTesting
  3. Name the Task Sequence
  4. Fill in comments.
  5. Click Next
  6. Select Standard Client Task. This is the default.
  7. Click Next
  8. Select an Operating System. Any one will do as you will not need this.
  9. Click Next
  10. Select Do not specify a product key at this time. Again this answer to this question will not be needed.
  11. Click Next
  12. Just put any character in the Full Name, Organization and Internet Explorer Home Page dialog boxes. These will not be used either.
  13. Click Next
  14. Select Do not specify an Administrator password at this time. This will not be used either.
  15. Click Finish
  16. Open your newly created task by double clicking on the item
  17. Remove all tasks with the exception of the Install group and Install Operating System item, State Restore group and Gather Local Only item.
  18. Click on Install Operating System. In the right hand pane click the options pane and check the Disable this step check box
  19. Click on the State Restore. In the right hand pane click the options pane
  20. Highlight the Task Sequence in the lower right hand window and Remove this task
  21. Add any applications you want to test in the State Restore Group
  22. Go back to your test machine and connect to your deployment share.
  23. Go to the Scripts folder and run the LiteTouch.vbs file to kick off your test.
  24. The only dialog box that matters is the First one. Make sure you select the newly created task sequence and click next.
  25. Answer the defaults for the rest of the dialogs.

Your Tasks should now execute.

TechNet Webcast Audio: Network Diagnostics in Windows Vista (Level 200)

In this webcast, we examine two new network diagnostics technologies that are built into the Windows Vista operating system: the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) and the Network Diagnostics Framework (NDF). Both of these features are entirely new in Windows, and they replace existing features that you may have seen in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. We explain how NCSI and NDF can help you understand why your Windows Vista system is experiencing network-related connectivity issues, beyond simply supplying you with error messages. We describe how NCSI and NDF can also help you identify and repair many common network-related issues quickly without requiring the use of the command-line tools, which was the only option in the past. Join us to learn more about these powerful diagnostic tools. Original Broadcast Date: Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Thanks for the quick reply!

I’ve already tried to turn it of but Vista won’t allow me to turn of the DEP for MovieMaker (…or DVDMaker or CaptureWizard!)

I looked at what you wrote in the beginning of this thread about not installing a burning software. I just bought this computer and Roxio was installed automatically from the beginning. Do you think it has got anything to do with that?

Change Data Execution Prevention settings

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats by monitoring your programs to make sure they use system memory safely.

If you choose to protect all programs, you can still turn off DEP for individual programs. If you suspect that a program does not run correctly when DEP is turned on, check for a DEP-compatible version of the program or an update from the software publisher before you change any DEP settings.

1. Click to open System.
2. Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Under Performance, click Settings.
4.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

4.1 To turn off DEP for an individual program
Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.

If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Files folder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open.

Hi! I hope there still are people reading this thread… I’m also having problems with the Movie Maker. It starts alright but as soon as I try to load a movie file I get the message about the “data execution prevention”. I even get this message when trying to transfer/download video from my DV-cam. Does anyone have a solution?
